Freiburg - Language & Area Studies

Program Overview

Tucked at the foot of the Black Forest, Freiburg is the quintessential southern German town, with its winding streets and historic architecture. It is also home to Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, consistently rated one of the top universities in Germany. We invite you to study abroad in Freiburg and to immerse yourself in student life and German language in this vibrant university town.

Ideal for students interested in rapidly improving their German language skills, the IES Abroad Freiburg Program offers you IES Abroad and university courses taught in German by distinguished local faculty.

You can also enroll in courses at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg or other local academic institutions where you will experience the German education system first-hand.

Visit www.IESabroad.org for complete program details.

Why Freiburg?

It is impossible not to fall in love with Freiburg. Maybe it's the curving cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and beautiful cathedral. Or maybe it's the city's progressive mindset--Freiburg shows a remarkable commitment to the environment and the development of sustainable technologies. Either way, we invite you to study abroad in Freiburg and discover all there is to love about this enchanting university town.

Student Life

We strive to make sure you feel safe, cared for, and at home while you’re away from home. Whether it’s the orientation program that makes you feel prepared, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, the cultural events that make it easy and fun to meet other international and local students, or the field trips and walking tours that take you to places tourists don’t usually see—we’re all about our student service. Learn more about the day-to-day studying abroad on this program. From field trips to housing, it’s all on IES Abroad’s website.

Scholarships & Aid

That's why we commit $5 million in study abroad scholarships and aid, all offered through one quick and easy application. Check out all of our scholarship options at www.IESabroad.org/aid.

TCU-Affiliated Programs

Credits

All coursework is recorded as TCU residency credit (not transfer credit), meaning it may be approved for TCU academic requirements, and grades earned will be included the TCU GPA. Your program will provide a grade conversion indicating how the grades from abroad will be converted to the TCU scale.

You will work through the credit approval process with your academic advisors and dean to determine how the coursework abroad will apply to your degree plan (i.e., for major, minor, core, or upper level elective requirements). You should have a minimum of 10 – 12 courses pre-approved for semester-long programs.

While abroad, you will remain a currently enrolled, degree-seeking student at TCU. Semester students typically earn 12 – 18 credit hours.

For more information about coursework and credits, see our Study Abroad Basics page.

TCU bills tuition and program fee to your TCU student account.
